As a Brit, the thought of celebrating Compliance Officer Day did not sit comfortably at first. From time to time, I can be shy, socially awkward, and overly polite. If you’re from the UK and are anything like me, there’s a good chance you also experience some of these very British problems. Modesty is our watchword. The centre of attention is the opposite of where we want to be. Public celebrations of personal success are to be avoided at all costs.

‘Blowing your own trumpet’ is strictly reserved for the Changing of the Guard.

All of that being said, despite my initial personal discomfort, I’m going to celebrate Compliance Officer Day anyway…and it’s not because I’ve been spending time in the U.S. and it’s starting to rub off on me.

It’s because over the past 15 years, my role at SAI Global has allowed me to work with compliance professionals from large and small organisations around the world. I understand the challenges they face, the importance of the work they do, and the dedication they have because I’ve seen it with my own eyes. It’s impressive and inspirational enough to push me out of my comfort zone. I regularly see ethics and compliance teams with limited resources in challenging business environments overcome those obstacles to successfully promote the positive business benefits of an ethical culture and compliant business practices.

I believe that the value delivered by the global compliance community drives fairer, more honest and ethical behaviour in business, and THAT is worth celebrating. It’s been an amazing journey so far, and we’re far from finished.

Compliance Officer Day allows us to recognise that compliance professionals are here to make a positive impact on our businesses and the world at large. They’re here to help us feel comfortable and prepared in situations of uncertainty. They’re the guardian angels on our shoulder during potential moments of misconduct.

So I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the compliance officers, whether we’ve worked together or not, for the work that they do. Let’s celebrate the work being done by this community around the world. Happy Compliance Officer Day!
